WhySoSerious

WhySoSerious was the Joker emote in Twitch's October 15, 2021 DC trio with DarkKnight and HarleyWink. Its name came from "Why so serious?", the line inseparably associated with Heath Ledger's Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. The emote's grinning clown imagery and the command itself both point directly to that version of Batman's most famous enemy.

The Joker first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940 and became the chaotic opposite of Batman's obsession with order and justice. The Dark Knight turned that conflict into one of the character's best-known film portrayals, with Ledger's Joker repeatedly using jokes, conflicting stories and theatrical violence to unsettle everyone around him. WhySoSerious converted the film's taunting phrase into a Twitch reaction for the same basic idea: mocking somebody for treating a ridiculous situation with too much seriousness.

When this emote was active, viewers typed WhySoSerious in Twitch chat to use it. Viewers used WhySoSerious for Joker and Batman references, dark or sarcastic jokes, DC discussion, or to tease a streamer or chatter who was taking something far more seriously than the situation deserved.
