StinkyCheese launched beside NomNom and ChefFrank on March 15, 2016 for Twitch.tv/Food. Twitch started the 24/7 cooking channel with all 201 episodes of Julia Child's The French Chef, then kept the channel running after almost one million viewers tuned into the opening marathon.

The emote turns its command into a literal smiling piece of cheese. Twitch reused that character joke in 2018 when it introduced Cheddar's 24/7 technology and business news channel: the announcement said Twitch had tried asking StinkyCheese for tech and business news, but the emote only smiled back, so the company had found a new form of cheese.

Viewers type StinkyCheese for cheese, food, cooking streams, goofy grins and deliberately cheesy jokes. It also carries callbacks to Twitch's Food channel and the later Cheddar wordplay.
