Shush

Shush shows a finger pressed to the lips, the universal visual request for silence. Twitch added it on April 1, 2022 as part of the same April Fools rollout that introduced joke categories including Silent Reading, Pizza Time, Character Creation, Chores, Odd Jobs and Errands, and Literally Just Chatting.

Silent Reading made the connection especially literal. Twitch's Mary Kish sat on the official Twitch channel and silently read Junji Ito's Lovesickness for an hour. More than 2,400 viewers watched while the chat ran in emote-only mode, leaving the audience to communicate entirely through emotes while Kish said nothing.

The Shush command turns the finger-to-lips image into a one-word instruction and fits the Silent Reading joke perfectly. What began as Twitch's April Fools experiment also gave chat a permanent reaction for secrets, spoilers and moments where everybody is supposed to stay quiet.

Type Shush in Twitch chat to use this emote. Viewers use Shush to ask for quiet, react to secrets or spoilers, tell chat not to give something away, and reference Twitch's 2022 Silent Reading joke and Mary Kish's Lovesickness stream.
