Twitch Global Emote
SabaPing
CurrentThe Origin Story
SabaPing turns Japanese wordplay into a mackerel. `Saba` means mackerel, and Japanese internet slang also uses `saba` for a server because it resembles the Japanese pronunciation of `server`. `Ping` supplies the network-latency half of the joke, so the command can refer to both a fish and a server connection.
By 2017, Twitch viewers were building rhyme chants around SabaPing with lines such as `spam this fish`, using the mackerel itself as the punchline. Twitch later included SabaPing in its 2023 low_res.jpg merchandise collection, reworking the older Global Emote as an 8-bit-style design.
How to Use It
Viewers type SabaPing for lag, high ping, unstable servers and connection problems. It also works as the literal fish in old `spam this fish` style chants.
