NotLikeThis shows Twitch engineer Ben Swartz clutching his head while watching Super Smash Bros. Melee player HugS lose at EVO 2015. A photograph of Swartz's reaction was posted on July 23, 2015 with the suggestion that the anguished pose should become a Twitch emote, and the face was adopted soon afterward.

The command comes from "Not like this," the line spoken in The Matrix as the character Switch realizes she is about to die. That reference gives the emote a more specific meaning than ordinary disappointment: the outcome is bad, but the way it happened is what makes it especially painful.
