NomNom debuted on March 15, 2016 with the launch of Twitch.tv/Food, Twitch Creative's new 24/7 channel for cooking and food programming. Twitch opened the channel with a marathon of all 201 episodes of Julia Child's The French Chef and introduced three new global emotes at the same time: NomNom, ChefFrank, and StinkyCheese.

NomNom is a bitten cookie, matching the familiar `nom nom` sound used for eating. The Julia Child marathon drew nearly one million viewers before Twitch continued the Food channel with round-the-clock cooking shows, giving the cookie emote a launch story tied directly to Twitch's expansion beyond game streaming.

Viewers type NomNom in Twitch chat for food, eating, cookies, cooking streams, snack breaks, and moments when something on screen looks especially good to eat.
