GunRun

The Origin Story

GunRun depicts Justin "TheGunrun" Ignacio, who joined Justin.tv/Twitch in May 2011 and was later described as Twitch's second employee and Broadcast Success Engineer. Ignacio says he invented `Gunrun` at age 13 while playing Neopets. Because Justin.tv founder Justin Kan shared his first name, Ignacio told his new coworkers to call him Gunrun, turning the childhood username into his workplace name.

Ignacio's early Twitch work centered on getting broadcasts online and keeping them stable. In a February 2012 StarCraft AMA, he described a `never-ending obsession with stream quality`, linked his own Streaming 101 guide and answered broadcasters' technical questions; another viewer thanked him for the immediate help he gave when streams stopped working properly. Twitch's 2013 CBR guide introduced him as its `Streaming Wizard`, while a 2014 profile described him managing broadcasts including The International and the League of Legends Championship Series and helping individual streamers get their feeds running.

In 2018, Ignacio began building what became the Gunrun IRL Backpack around a LiveU Solo, supplementing its two cellular modems with two MiFi connections for more bandwidth, reliability and redundancy. Twitch lent one of the backpacks to Trivium frontman Matt Heafy, who used it to stream warm-ups and concerts while touring. GunRun also became a technical-problem reaction in Twitch chat, spammed when IRL streams dropped or esports broadcasts hit technical trouble.

Twitch removed GunRun from the global set on July 24, 2025.

How to Use It

When this emote was active, viewers typed GunRun in Twitch chat to use it. Viewers used it for Justin Ignacio references and when streams went down, esports broadcasts developed technical problems, or IRL streaming equipment lost its connection, reflecting Ignacio's long-running role as Twitch's broadcast troubleshooter and the creator of the Gunrun backpack.
