GoatEmotey came from Twitch Recap 2023. Twitch's Recap Game sent players through the year as a tiny sprinting Glitch dinosaur, collecting goat emote heads for points on a global leaderboard. Streamers could play it live while their chat helped them collect more.

The goat was also a wordplay choice. Contemporary campaign reporting explicitly described the goat icons as a riff on `G.O.A.T.`, `Greatest of All Time`, fitting an end-of-year celebration of Twitch's standout moments. Viewers could use the new recap-themed chat emote during participating streams to help boost the streamer's game score, connecting the global reaction directly back to the collectible inside the game.
