Twitch Global Emote

The Origin Story

;) is Twitch's classic wink family. In the sideways face, the semicolon supplies the wink and the closing parenthesis supplies the smile. Twitch's standard robot artwork closes one eye, while ;-) adds the optional hyphen nose used in older keyboard emoticons.

The wink grew from the same early text-emoticon culture as :-) and :-(. Scott Fahlman proposed that smile/frown pair at Carnegie Mellon in 1982, and winking ;-) was among the early variations that followed. By 2013, the wink was also part of TwitchTV's basic emoticon system, which could be shown with alternate artwork through Twitch Turbo.

How to Use It

Viewers type ;) in Twitch chat to use this emote. Twitch also recognizes ;-) in the same artwork family. The wink works for playful teasing, light sarcasm, joking agreement, or a line that should be read less literally than a plain smile.
