EarthDay

EarthDay shows Earth as a blue-and-purple globe and takes its command from Earth Day, the environmental observance held every April 22. The first Earth Day was organized in 1970 after Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson recruited activist Denis Hayes to build a national series of environmental teach-ins.

The date was chosen to fall between spring break and final exams so students could participate. About 20 million Americans joined the first Earth Day, roughly 10 percent of the U.S. population at the time, and the movement helped build momentum for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and major environmental laws.

Earth Day became international on a much larger scale in 1990, when Denis Hayes helped organize events involving about 200 million people in 141 countries. Twitch's globe needs no separate mascot or campaign story because the image and command directly represent that global observance.
