CoolStoryBob shows painter and television host Bob Ross and was created for Twitch's 2016 return of The Joy of Painting marathon. Twitch Creative had launched one year earlier with an 8.5-day broadcast of all 403 original episodes, drawing millions of viewers and producing the KappaRoss global emote.

For the anniversary, Twitch restarted the complete Bob Ross marathon on October 29, 2016 around what would have been Ross's 74th birthday. The platform enabled co-streaming of the marathon, invited viewers to call a Bob Ross phone line with stories and brought the entire 403-episode run back to the /bobross channel. Twitch also noted that KappaRoss had been used about 3.8 million times during the previous year.

CoolStoryBob was the new global emote for that second marathon. Its command riffs on "cool story, bro" by replacing "bro" with Bob, letting Ross's smiling portrait work as both an affectionate Bob Ross reference and a dry response to a long story.
