Twitch Global Emote

The Origin Story

cmonBruh depicts a person giving a skeptical, confused look. The command reads as "c'mon, bruh," turning the expression into a compact reaction for disbelief, confusion or something that makes chat ask, "Are you serious?"

The emote was already tied to race-related controversy by February 2016. Streamer and fighting-game creator Shofu criticized the way viewers were using cmonBruh on February 9, and discussion the following day connected the emote to a Reckful stream clip in which a racial slur was heard. Early cmonBruh therefore had a dual role: viewers could use the skeptical face to call out something offensive, but the command was already becoming entangled with the subject of race itself.

That distinction eroded as viewers increasingly posted cmonBruh before anyone had said something offensive. The emote began appearing around stereotypes, certain words, names and phonetic coincidences simply because chat associated them with race. A reaction that could condemn racism was also being weaponized as racialized spam.

How to Use It

HasanAbi confronted that problem in June 2019 while discussing Bernie Sanders's 1985 trip to Nicaragua. Viewers spammed cmonBruh and TriHard around the word "Nicaragua" because part of the word sounded similar to a racial slur, and Hasan banned both emotes from his chat.

Asmongold dealt with a similar problem during World of Warcraft Classic coverage when viewers used cmonBruh and TriHard around ape enemies and other race-related jokes. He also removed the emotes from his channel as moderation against the spam.

xQc removed cmonBruh from his own Twitch chat on June 5, 2020. Community discussion around the decision drew a clear distinction between the older use of cmonBruh after somebody actually said something racist and the newer habit of posting it proactively around stereotypes, keywords or unrelated cues. xQc's decision became one of the best-known examples of an official Twitch global remaining available platform-wide while an individual streamer decided that its local meaning had become dominated by harassment.

The controversy is therefore part of cmonBruh's meaning, not an unrelated footnote. The same skeptical face has been used to challenge offensive speech and to participate in the racialized behavior it was supposedly reacting to.
