CarlSmile

CarlSmile shows astronomer Carl Sagan, host of the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Twitch put Sagan at the center of Science Week in April 2017, opening the event with all 13 episodes of Cosmos before programming with NASA, CosmoQuest and Sagan's Cosmos co-creator Ann Druyan.

The grayscale Sagan portrait soon developed Twitch-specific uses beyond science programming. A June 2017 Imaqtpie copypasta treated a white shirt and gray screen like clues in a mock scientific diagnosis, ending with CarlSmile and a claim about `empirical data`.

SaltyBet gave the emote a separate betting meaning. The `!dbz` command returned `Always bet on DBZ CarlSmile`, echoing an old rule of thumb from the period when Dragon Ball Z characters often performed strongly in SaltyBet's AI-controlled fights. Later chat used the maxim ironically, with academic research describing CarlSmile as a reaction of weary familiarity around the repeated DBZ joke.

Viewers type CarlSmile for Carl Sagan, Cosmos and science references. In SaltyBet culture, it also accompanies the ironic `Always bet on DBZ` refrain when a familiar betting pattern appears again.
