BlackLivesMatter

BlackLivesMatter uses a raised fist in Twitch purple and takes its command directly from the Black Lives Matter movement. The raised fist has a much longer history as a symbol of protest, resistance and solidarity, and it became especially prominent in Black Lives Matter imagery during the worldwide protests of 2020.

Twitch added the global on June 26, 2020. That month the platform was publicly expanding support for Black communities: it partnered with Tiltify to add fundraising options for organizations connected to the Black Lives Matter movement, increased homepage visibility for Black creators and paused a planned Pride emote promotion while acknowledging the widespread pain surrounding the protests.

The command and fist therefore preserve a specific piece of Twitch's 2020 platform history rather than functioning as a generic raised-hand reaction.
